We brought home a rescue cat a couple of years ago, and I spent the first week quietly wondering if we'd adopted the sleepiest cat in the world.
Every morning she'd appear the second she heard me open the food container. She'd eat, walk over to the window, sit there for a minute as if something interesting might happen, and then vanish.

Our cat doesn't seem particularly interested in what's happening outside. She'll sit by the window for a while, watch a bird land on the fence, maybe follow a butterfly with her eyes, and then decide she's seen enough. Five minutes later she's back on the sofa, completely asleep again.
That's just her day.
Every now and then she'll get a sudden burst of energy. She'll chase a toy across the hallway, disappear after it, and then lose interest halfway through as if she'd forgotten why she started.
We still keep a few cat toys for indoor cats around because every so often she'll surprise us. A toy she completely ignored last week suddenly becomes her favourite thing for the afternoon. Cats are funny like that. They decide when something is interesting, not us.

They don't need much to stay entertained
I've noticed that cats don't stay interested in anything for very long.
The little toy mouse they couldn't stop chasing on Monday might sit untouched for the rest of the week. Then, for no reason at all, they'll find it again a few days later and act as though it's a brand-new discovery.
We've stopped buying into the idea that they need constant entertainment.
Some evenings all it takes is a feather wand or a soft ball rolling across the floor. They'll play for ten minutes, lose interest without warning, and wander off in search of their next nap. Apparently that's enough.
Brushing can be just as unpredictable.
Some cats disappear the moment they see a brush come out. Others walk over before you've even picked it up. Ours usually waits until she's in the mood, then stands there purring while we run a cat grooming brush through her coat.
Cats have a funny way of deciding how the day is going to go. The rest of us are just expected to go along with it.
No two cats are alike
If you've ever tried planning a day around a cat, you've probably already lost. They'll sleep through an entire afternoon, then decide eleven o'clock at night is the perfect time to race from one end of the house to the other.
They'll ignore the expensive bed you bought and curl up inside the empty delivery box instead. That's simply part of sharing your home with a cat.
If dinner still disappears in thirty seconds and they're curious about the world around them, they're probably doing just fine.
